US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned a group of lawmakers in Congress about an allegedly possible Azerbaijani invasion of Armenia in the foreseeable future. This was reported by the Politico newspaper, citing sources.
According to them, a group of American lawmakers from the Democratic Party, in a telephone conversation on October 3, asked Blinken a question about what measures the administration could take against Azerbaijan in connection with the latest escalation of the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to the publication, the head of the Foreign Ministry responded by emphasizing that the US authorities are “looking for opportunities to hold Azerbaijan accountable,” and also plan to review the provision of military assistance to Azerbaijan.
According to the publication, Blinken added that the State Department “considers it possible for Azerbaijan to invade the southern part of Armenia in the coming weeks.”
Previously Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ben Cardin stated that the United States administration should suspend the provision of military assistance to Azerbaijan in connection with the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. In September, his predecessor in this post made the same statements Robert Menendez.
On September 19, another escalation began in Nagorno-Karabakh. The start of a military operation was announced in Baku. Yerevan called what was happening “large-scale aggression.” Russia called on the parties to the conflict to stop the bloodshed and return to a diplomatic settlement. On September 20, an agreement was reached to cease hostilities, and the next day a meeting of representatives of Baku and the Armenian population of Karabakh was held in the Azerbaijani city of Yevlakh “to discuss issues of reintegration.”
President of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Samvel Shahramanyan On September 28, he signed a decree to terminate its existence from January 1, 2024. The population was ordered to consider the terms of reintegration proposed by Baku and independently decide on the possibility of remaining. According to Yerevan, more than 100 thousand internally displaced persons have entered Armenia from Nagorno-Karabakh, whose population until recently was about 120 thousand people.
