New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has upheld the action of the Patiala House Court in which News Click founder editor Prabir Purkayastha and HR chief Amit Chakraborty were released into police custody. The plea filed by both of them was rejected, alleging that the police special cell did not write down the reasons for the arrest. The Supreme Court’s ruling that reasons for arrest should be written down is related to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The High Court also clarified that the Supreme Court judgment is not applicable in the UAPA case. On October 4, the Patiala House Court remanded both of them in seven-day custody. Justice Tushar Rao Gedela ruled that there is no merit in the petition which stated that he did not even agree to appoint a lawyer at that time. He was arrested on October 3 on charges of receiving foreign funds from those working for China’s interests. Prabir had argued in the High Court that the funds did not come to News Click from China and it was a fake case. The Delhi Police informed that the investigation is being conducted on the serious allegation of receiving Rs 75 crore from China. Currently, Prabir and Amit are in jail under judicial custody. The Delhi High Court is considering the plea to quash the Delhi Police’s FIR. The court had clarified that a decision can be taken later including sending a notice. The CBI has also registered a case on the allegation that the NewsClick news portal received foreign funds and started an investigation.
