India’s Comprehensive Roadmap for AI and Robotics: Aiming for Global Leadership

In an effort to position India as a major player in the global AI and robotics landscape, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, has unveiled a comprehensive roadmap for India’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) programme. This roadmap serves as the foundation for the broader National Strategy for Robotics.

The minister highlighted two major developments that will contribute to India’s AI and robotics strategy. The first is the culmination of a deep and multi-year AI strategy, which includes the substantial work of six working groups on AI. These groups have produced a comprehensive report that will serve as the core of India’s AI strategy.

The second development is the initiation of a national robotics policy. The ministry has released the National Strategy for Robotics, open for public consultation, which aims to address matters related to Industry 4.0 and robotics. This policy will align with the broader AI strategy and seek inputs from various stakeholders.

Key highlights of India’s AI and robotics strategy include the goal of becoming a kinetic enabler of a $1 billion digital economy. The strategy aims to harness the potential of AI to drive economic growth and innovation. Additionally, the strategy emphasizes the transformational impact of AI on multiple sectors, such as fintech, governance, education, agriculture, healthcare, national security, and manufacturing.

Crucial components of the strategy include the establishment of the India Datasets Platform, collaboration with academic institutions for Centers of Excellence, skill development initiatives, nurturing AI startups, financial incentives, a public-private partnership model for AI compute infrastructure, and a notable partnership for the advancement of artificial intelligence chips and computing hardware.

A vital aspect of the India AI programme is the aggregation and availability of diverse datasets. These datasets will be made available in an integrated manner through the India Datasets Platform, void of personal data, to serve as foundational models for training AI algorithms.

Chandrasekhar emphasized the importance of Indian startups, academia, and companies in shaping the future of AI. The government will provide support in terms of funding and infrastructural support for AI computing infrastructure to these stakeholders.

With the unveiling of this roadmap, India is taking significant steps to become a major player in the field of AI and robotics. By leveraging its resources and fostering collaboration, India aims to harness the transformative power of AI for economic growth and innovation.
