Intensifying HPV Vaccination for Female Students in Banyuwangi Regency to Prevent Cervical Cancer

The Banyuwangi Regency Government, East Java, is intensifying vaccination human papilloma virus (HPV) for female students in grades V and VI of elementary schools (SD) to prevent cervical cancer from an early age.

Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani, in Banyuwangi, Friday, explained that the HPV vaccine is given to protect oneself from HPV infection which causes cervical cancer.

To date, 17,430 students have achieved HPV vaccination for female students aged 11-12 years, or 83 percent of the total target of 21,000 female students who will be vaccinated.

“We continue to monitor the implementation of vaccination, and the target is to be completed this month,” said Ipuk Fiestiandani.

The Regent of Ipuk also monitored the implementation of HPV vaccination for elementary school students, one of which was when reviewing the HPV vaccination at SDN 3 Bagorejo on the sidelines of the Bunga Desa (Regent of Ngantor in the Village) program in Bagorejo Village, Srono District.

“This is an effort to prevent early cases of cervical cancer in women of reproductive age. By being injected with the HPV vaccine at the age of 11-12 years, it is hoped that when they enter productive age their immunity will be strong against the virus papilloma,” he said.

Meanwhile, Acting Head of the Banyuwangi District Health Service, Amir Hidayat, explained that this program had started in Banyuwangi last year. This program targets 21,000 female students, with details of 10,000 class V students and 11,000 class VI students.

“Class V girls will get the first dose, while class VI girls will receive the second dose. The first dose was given last year when they were still in class V,” he said.

He explained that this vaccination was carried out on a school basis and in its implementation, health workers from regional health centers went to schools, Islamic boarding schools and community learning activity centers (PKBM) to vaccinate the targets.

“Each target will receive two doses of the HPV vaccine at an interval of one year. As a reminder, female students who have been injected with the first dose will receive a card as an introduction to the second dose of vaccination,” said Amir.
