New York Voters Disapprove of Authorities’ Handling of Immigration Crisis, Survey Finds

New York voters disapproved of the way authorities have handled the immigration crisis in the city, a survey revealed.

Last September Televisa-Univision and Media Predict conducted a survey in New York on immigration.

1,737 people over 18 years of age, all registered to vote, were interviewed. 834 Hispanic and 903 non-Hispanic.

According to the survey results, 53 percent of both groups agree that the arrival of immigrants to New York City is a serious problem.

But only 26 percent of Hispanics think the city should give them free housing, food, and medical care, while the majority think they should not be supported as much with taxpayer money.

75 percent of respondents believe it is likely that the costs associated with the arrival of immigrants will negatively impact city services.

They disapprove of the authorities’ response to the immigration crisis

In total, 85% of Hispanics surveyed blame the federal, state and local governments for the immigration crisis.

Furthermore, more than 40% of Hispanic voters do not approve of the way in which the three powers have handled the issue.

Nearly 40% of Hispanic voters consider it unlikely to vote for Eric Adams, current mayor of New York, in the future due to his handling of the crisis.

While one in three of Hispanics surveyed say they are unlikely to vote for Hochul or Biden in the future.

Housing and security, the issues that most concern New Yorkers

When asking respondents about the issues that concern them most, they highlight the cost of living, quality of life, crime and affordable housing.

When asked about the requests to the authorities, most of those surveyed indicated that it is a priority to lower crime rates and have affordable access to housing.

The issue of affordable housing is a relevant topic in the survey, since the demand is so great in New York City that officials estimate that half a million new homes must be provided over the next ten years to meet that need.

On the other hand, the Televisa Univision and Media Predict survey also asked about security and both groups thought that immigrants make New York City more unsafe and even dangerous.

However, it should be mentioned that according to NYPD data, crime in New York City has decreased in 2023 compared to last year. With 29% fewer people shot, 12% fewer rapes and 10% fewer murders. What has increased is the number of aggravated assaults with 19%.

In summary, the survey reflects that voters feel that the immigration crisis affects job opportunities, security in the city and also worsens the homeless crisis.

The survey was conducted between September 13 and 21 in New York. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.5% for Hispanics and 3.3% for non-Hispanics.
