European Union’s Glyphosate Decision and Concerns over Health and Biodiversity

Oct 13, 2023 at 12:32 Update: 24 minutes ago

Within the European Union, no majority emerged on Friday to make a decision on glyphosate. Member States will have one more chance to vote in November. After that, the fate of the pesticide lies in the hands of the European Commission.

Member states were allowed to vote on Friday on whether to allow the controversial weed killer glyphosate to be used for another ten years. To prevent extension, at least fifteen EU countries were needed, together representing at least 65 percent of the EU population. That was not the case.

The Netherlands did not vote, even though the House of Representatives had insisted on voting against an extension. This led to anger among Dutch politicians, although the Netherlands’ vote was probably not decisive.

Because there was no majority in favor of the extension among EU member states, another vote will take place in November. If they cannot reach an agreement, the European Commission will make a decision. He would like to see the extension continue.

If the permission for glyphosate is extended, this does not automatically mean that it will also be permitted in the Netherlands in the coming years.

Drug linked to cancer

Many people know glyphosate under the brand Roundup. It was introduced to the market by the Monsanto company in the 1970s, but is now sold by more manufacturers.

The drug is often associated with an increased risk of Parkinson’s and cancer. But there is no conclusive evidence yet that glyphosate actually causes these diseases. More research is needed for this. In addition, there are concerns about the consequences for biodiversity.
