Oct 12 (Reuters) – The New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) on Thursday approved construction of a $160 million battery energy storage facility in Brookhaven, a town in Suffolk County At New York.
Holtsville Energy Storage, an independent developer of battery storage projects, will build the facility which is expected to be operational by 2025.
The project is expected to generate local tax revenue and up to 200 local jobs during construction, as well as long-term employment once the facility is operational, according to the developer.
The PSC also believed that the project would help achieve environmental justice goals by reducing reliance on old oil and natural gas power plants in New York State.
Battery energy storage installations can also result in long-term savings for electricity consumers by reducing the overall cost of providing electricity and allowing customers to avoid paying premium rates or tariffs for peak periods.
On January 5, 2022, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul announced plans to double the state’s energy storage goal to at least 6 gigawatts (GW) of here in 2030.
