“You will pay the same amount for a house with a pool in Bali as if you bought a studio apartment in Bratislava. However, it is worthwhile to use higher quality materials more resistant to moisture and mold during construction. I once left my jeans in the house for seven weeks, and when I came back there were mushrooms growing out of them.” says Slovak Marcela, who has been living in Bali for ten years.
She moved here in 2013 when she received a scholarship to study traditional dance. Today, she designs and builds houses, but her passion is also tourism and guiding tourists across Asian countries. “It was a strange beginning. Indonesia kept pulling me back after my studies, I especially fell in love with Bali, because it is a great harmony between Eastern and Western lifestyles.”

What happened after you finished your studies?
To put things into perspective, I attended a one-year degree program, but I have no degree as a traditional dancer. (laughter) Anyone under the age of 30 can apply there. After my studies, I started working in tourism and I am still doing it. I accompany tourists to basically all Asian countries. When covid came, flying suddenly stopped and all my businesses and production jobs stopped along with it. People couldn’t come to me, I couldn’t come to them.

Has anything changed during the pandemic?
What I was doing changed. I built my house six years ago. Over time, I gained some experience in construction in Indonesia and met my ex-partner, who was also doing the same. We started building and designing houses professionally, founded a company and spent the covid years building villas and doing various shops and a yoga shala.
In Europe, we are used to there being some spatial plans, rules, cadastral offices and the like. Here it’s all the same, but it’s more “punk” and everyone does what they want.
Are there many Slovaks in Bali who do something similar?
I know many people who came here and started building and renting villas. I understand them. With the real estate prices in Europe, I’m not even surprised. For the price of a studio apartment in Bratislava, you can have a house with your own pool. Another thing, real estate here is very profitable, which means that you will get your money back in a few years. It is money very well invested, the return is very fast. Those who have the courage and business thinking will do it.
