Gwerz Denez: A Captivating Book of Breton Poetry by Denez Prigent

A book of 800 pages, dressed in a beautiful purple cover allowing the romantic photo of the singer to stand out on the canvas cardboard, sits on my desk. It is there, imposing but discreet, slipping into the layers of paper. Denez seems to be staring at me, as if to invite me to open the book, his new opus which comes out this October 13, 2023 from Editions Ouest-France.

I don’t yet know what to expect: a first preface by Philippe Le Guillou who talentedly offers a reading landscape with the poetic accents of Brittany. It puts into perspective and invites you to better immerse yourself in the musical fervor of a Denez with glowworms. Verses whose roots Francis Favereau explains to us in a second preface. Because the singer with the golden voice offers us nothing less than a sum of his gwerziù. More than 100 titles that he wrote himself, an exceptional heritage to discover without delay. Gwerz Denezthese are texts written in Breton and translated into French, which sing with passion the soul of Brittany.

Inspired by traditional gwerziù, this long series of poems invites us, through wonderful stories, to rediscover the essence of an ancestral story where the presence of the Ankou is omnipresent.
