Under the title “The Good Fight”, the Human Rights Film Festival Berlin (HRFFB) will take place until October 22, 2023, where international and award-winning documentaries will be presented. As the title suggests, human rights are the focus. Over forty documentaries take visitors on a journey through stories from all parts of the world and offer insights into the social status quo as well as central themes such as democracy, justice, freedom and environmental protection.
In 2018, the Human Rights Film Festival was launched by Action Against Hunger. The idea behind it: to move people and bring about a change in thinking and actions. The festival shows stories of people who are committed to a better world. One film, for example, deals with the story of the Kurdish-Turkish activist Mutlu Kaya, who was gunned down before reaching the final of “Turkey’s Got Talent” because she rejected a marriage proposal. Another highlight is “Holding Up the Sky,” which tells the story of Yanomami activist Davi Kopenawa and his son Dario, who fight together to protect their habitat, the rainforest.

Visitors can expect an extensive range of workshops, master classes and interactive discussions in the Human Rights Forum. In addition, discussions and question-and-answer sessions with filmmakers and activists accompany the films through the public discussion series “Talking Humanity,” which is taking place for the first time in the Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation Documentation Center.
This year’s film program will take place in six Berlin cinemas, including the Hackesche Höfe cinemas, the Kant cinema, the Sputnik cinema at Südstern, the Acud cinema, the cinema in the Zeiss Großplanetarium and the City cinema Wedding. This is the fifth time that the Willy Brandt Documentary Film Prize for Freedom and Human Rights has been awarded by an international jury.
