Inauguration of La Romaine Hydroelectric Complex: Quebec Celebrates Impressive Achievement

Prime Minister François Legault inaugurated the La Romaine hydroelectric complex on the North Shore on Thursday morning, the most imposing since James Bay.

“It brings me a lot of pride. It is truly the symbol of Quebec genius,” rejoiced Mr. Legault during his speech to dignitaries and workers.

The Prime Minister paid tribute to his predecessors, including the Liberal Jean Charest who was among the guests and who launched construction in 2009, affirming that they had made “the right choices”.

“Today, thanks to these choices, we have the lowest electricity rates in North America,” he said.

Mr. Legault was also accompanied by his Minister of Economy, Innovation and Energy, Pierre Fitzgibbon, and the CEO of Hydro-Québec, Michael Sabia.

According to Hydro-Québec, the La Romaine complex will produce 8 TWh per year, enabling it to power some 470,000 homes.

Construction took place between 2009 and 2023, at a cost of $7.4 billion.

The construction of La Romaine also had a human cost; the state-owned company reported that four workers have lost their lives over the years.

“These accidents have led Hydro-Québec to thoroughly review and strengthen its practices,” we said in a press release.

The Romaine River project is located north of Havre-Saint-Pierre, near the Labrador border.
