Horst Hrubesch is temporarily taking over the women’s national team. But what happens next for Martina Voss-Tecklenburg? A former world champion doesn’t believe in returning.

Berlin – The future of the current national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg is still uncertain. The 55-year-old has been ill since the disappointing preliminary round exit at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand at the beginning of August. Horst Hrubesch takes over the position on an interim basis. A former national player and world champion does not believe that Voss-Tecklenburg will return to the coaching bench.

World champion Künzer considers Voss-Tecklenburg’s return to be “very unlikely”

The former national player Nia Künzer now told the Kickerthat she considers Voss-Tecklenburg’s return as national coach to be “very unlikely”. “Many things didn’t fit together” at the messed up World Cup. There was subsequently much speculation that Voss-Tecklenburg would not return to office. Nevertheless, Künzer puts things into perspective. “Of course we have to be careful: Martina is on sick leave and in office.”

For the 2003 world champion, one reason in particular was crucial for her early elimination this year. “We are currently lacking leaders and guys. Players with the ability to overcome resistance. There is also Alexandra Popp to mention, but other than that? “We have lost this winning mentality and charisma a little,” explains Künzer about the current weakness of the DFB women.

Praise for Hrubesch’s comeback as national coach

However, Künzer believes that appointing Horst Hrubesch as national coach again is the right choice. “It is a very good interim solution for the DFB. He still knows some of the players and has credit because of his past. Horst Hrubesch is known for being able to build a good rapport very quickly and have a positive influence on the team and each individual player with his manner and approach. “That’s what the team needs now,” said Künzer, praising the reinstatement of Hrubesch as national coach.

At the same time, the appointment of Hrubesch as interim head gives the DFB peace and time in the search for a new sports directorate. “The sports director is then certainly responsible for the final clarification of the coaching question,” says Künzer. Voss-Tecklenburg is also considered a name for her position. Her husband recently described losing her completely as a “huge mistake”.

The 43-year-old is cautious about a possible successor to Voss-Tecklenburg. “If it happens that the position becomes vacant, it will of course depend above all on the qualifications. In the end, it will probably be a person who may not completely fulfill every single requirement or profile,” says Künzer. There is rarely an “ideal solution” anyway, but “the overall package” can still be right.

According to Künzer, gender does not play a role. “There are definitely women who I trust to become national coaches. There may not be that many female trainers overall and there should be more, but they are there and there are trainers coming,” says the ARD expert. A foreign trainer is also a possible option.
