Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Space mission towards a metallic asteroid, Psyche, canceled its launch into space tonight, Thursday (12/10) at 21.16 WIB. The weather is the culprit.
“NASA and SpaceX postponed the launch of the Psyche mission on October 12 due to unfavorable weather conditions,” the United States Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said in a statement in blog site Psyche.
“NASA and SpaceX are now targeting launch at 10:19 EDT (21.19 WIB) on Friday, October 13, from Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida,” the statement continued.
This launch is planned to be held live starting at 09.15 EDT (20.15 WIB) on the NASA TV channel. The launch broadcast can also be monitored on the YouTube, X, Facebook, Twitch, Daily Motion channels, the NASA application and the NASA website.
Previously, NASA scheduled the launch of the Psyche mission to asteroid 16 Psyche on Thursday (12/10) at 10.16 EDT or 21.16 WIB.
This spacecraft will be transported into space using a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA.
This spacecraft is scheduled to travel 3.5 billion km.
A few hours before launch, NASA said all systems were ready for this mission to a metal asteroid.
“The team has worked tirelessly to prepare the spacecraft for its journey to this unique asteroid,” Henry Stone, Psyche project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, said in a statement.
“All spacecraft systems, science instruments and software have been integrated and extensively tested, and the spacecraft is fully configured for flight,” he added.
This spacecraft will use its science instruments to learn more about metal-rich asteroids at the very edge of the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
This asteroid itself is more than just an ordinary space rock. Most likely, this asteroid is the metal core of a planet that is still alive and its outer layer was eroded long ago.
If this hypothesis is correct, 16 Psyche could potentially offer an exciting new way to study the core of planet Earth. This is because both are thought to have a similar metal composition, having a combination of iron and nickel.
“Another idea is that Psyche is some kind of ancient, unmelted body, essentially formed from the first materials in the solar system that coalesced under gravity, which have been preserved in primordial conditions ever since,” said Ben Weiss, the mission’s deputy principal investigator. Psyche.
NASA also believes that studying the asteroid Psyche can tell humans more about the origins of the solar system.
