A fifteen-year-old girl has been sentenced to twelve months of youth detention and youth TBS for stabbing to death a 39-year-old snack bar owner in The Hague in January. Her seventeen-year-old brother was given six months’ detention and another seventeen-year-old girl was sentenced to ten months by the court in The Hague for her role in the incident.
The Hague snack bar owner was kicked and punched by three young people in January. He was then stabbed in the chest and back. He died in hospital.
According to the Public Prosecution Service (OM), the fifteen-year-old girl stabbed the man several times. She received the maximum sentence that a fifteen-year-old can receive. The court agreed with the Public Prosecution Service’s demand.
Her brother was convicted of committing public violence. According to the court, it has not been proven that he knew that his sister had a knife with her. He received six months of youth detention and youth TBS, partly for another case involving four telephone thefts.
The third suspect, a seventeen-year-old girl, was sentenced to ten months of youth detention and youth TBS for public violence. Another matter also played a role in her case. She allegedly stabbed her mother’s ex.
Youth TBS, also known as the PIJ measure, is a treatment measure for young people who have a mental illness. The maximum duration of the PIJ measure is seven years.
‘Shocking conversations about the crime’
The motive of the young people is unknown. The young people were listened to during the investigation. It was “disconcerting and shocking how the children talked about what had happened,” the prosecutor said.
The court also points to the audio recordings. The two girls are said to have spoken about the incident “with the utmost contempt”.
The incident is “incomprehensible”, according to the court. “They have shown no remorse or insight into the suffering they have caused.”
The young people did not want to cooperate during the interrogations, according to the Public Prosecution Service. “Nor the efforts made to find out what can be done to get their lives back on track.”
