A Californian has won the second-largest lottery jackpot in American history. The person, whose identity has not been released, won $1.73 billion in the Powerball lottery.
The winning ticket was according to BBC sold in Frazier Park, a town near Los Angeles. The winner paid $2 for the ticket. The jackpot was so high because the last 35 draws had not yielded a winner.
The winner can receive the prize in one go or spread over thirty years. Most participants choose the first option. The highest jackpot ever was paid out last fall. Then another person from California won a $2 billion jackpot.
The high jackpot and the question of whether it would be paid out had occupied American media for weeks. Some Americans even traveled to another state if Powerball lottery tickets were not sold in their state.
The probability that a lottery participant will win the jackpot is according to BBC one in more than 292 million. By comparison, the chance of an American being struck by lightning is one in 1.2 million.
