Documentaries / The Le Monde au Coin de la Rue documentary festival returns to Grenoble from October 16 to 21. An exciting program for this completely free event. Let’s go !
Fascinating dive into the heart of creative documentary, the new edition of the festival The World Around the Corner takes us, once again this year, to the heart of multiple universes more or less distant from ours. That of the students of a Nigerian university, whose film club serves as a space for debate and political demands in the face of an unequal society (Coconut Head Generation). That of the marginalized queer youth of Medellin, who use cinema to reconcile with the ghosts of missing loved ones in a city plagued by endless violence (Anhell69). Or that of the “turkers” of the Amazon site, a global micro-community isolated behind their screens, whose trivial tasks paid for a few cents prepare the advent of artificial intelligence (Waiting for the robots) So many fascinating realities, which come to life on the screen through often daring cinematic choices.
In Silent Voice for example, the director follows a young Chechen MMA hopeful exiled in Belgium, hunted night and day by his community who swore his death after discovering his homosexuality. Impossible to show his face without putting him in danger, nor to make his voice heard, lost following the trauma. So how to go about it? In the short film Ours, a young director digitizes the images of an amateur filmmaker, who filmed bears for years. And discovers in doing so that he has also filmed young women in the street without their knowledge, in the absence of any consent. A confrontation begins Some examples, among many others (more than twenty films and sound documentaries will be presented in total), of the subjects and issues addressed by this extraordinary festival.
