NWO and Aidsfonds Award Grant for Collaborative HIV Cure Research

NWO has awarded this grant within the partnership with the Aidsfonds ‘HIV cure for everyone’. As one of the domains of NWO, ZonMw carries out this call for subsidies within the Knowledge and Innovation Covenant (KIC).

Within the awarded research project, (inter)national scientists work together in an interdisciplinary manner to conduct research into HIV cure. This collaboration goes beyond the boundaries of the research disciplines and can lead to groundbreaking new insights. Together with stakeholders from the community of people living with HIV and the business community, we are working to develop new insights and fresh perspectives for healing HIV.

Public-private cooperation

During a five-day sandpit workshop held at the beginning of this year, a partnership was formed and the participants drew up a joint research proposal. This proposal receives funding of 5.9 million euros from NWO and the Aidsfonds; public and private partners contribute EUR 637,660 as co-financing.

What does it take for a breakthrough?

To achieve the desired breakthrough required for an HIV cure, broad collaboration is necessary between scientific disciplines, public and private organizations and (inter)national organizations that represent people with HIV and other relevant target groups. Collaborating on a project proposal via the so-called sandpit procedure prevents mutual competition. Moreover, the forces of researchers can be effectively bundled in this way.

In addition, it is important to involve experts from outside the HIV research field, technical universities, social sciences and humanities, companies and people with HIV. This also applies to partners outside the Netherlands, in areas where expertise or critical mass is lacking. Social support and scalability of the therapy are an absolute requirement for making HIV cure actually available to everyone.
