Insomnia Linked to Increased Risk of Atrial Fibrillation: Study Reveals

[Voice of Hope October 12, 2023]Recently, JAHA magazine analyzed the electronic health records of more than 1 million veterans with an average age of 28 and found that young people have insomnia and are prone to atrial fibrillation. Insomnia may be an early risk factor for atrial fibrillation.

At the start of the study, about 11% of people suffered from insomnia. After 16 years of follow-up, a total of 4168 cases of atrial fibrillation were diagnosed.

People with insomnia have a 32% higher risk of developing atrial fibrillation than people without insomnia.

Male gender, obesity, alcohol abuse, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, heart disease, heart failure, and a history of mental disorders also increase the risk of atrial fibrillation. But after adjusting for these factors, people with insomnia still had a higher risk of atrial fibrillation.

The study also found that people with insomnia develop atrial fibrillation two years earlier on average than those without insomnia, with the age distribution of the disease being 42.8 years old and 45.1 years old.

The researchers noted that these findings indicate the need for further analysis of the relationship between insomnia and cardiovascular risk in the general population to confirm that insomnia is indeed a risk factor for atrial fibrillation.
