England captain Harry Kane hopes to emulate Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and several other modern greats by continuing to play at the highest level into his late thirties.
Advances in sports science this century have led to top players in the sport continuing beyond the age of 35, which used to be an age at which many retired.
Ronaldo will be 39 when he celebrates his next birthday in February 2024, and was 37 when he enjoyed a 24-goal season with Manchester United before taking his career to Saudi Arabia. Similar, Messi turned 36 shortly after the end of the 2022/23 season and moved to Inter Miami in July.
Robert Lewandowski turned 35 in August and is as important as ever to Barcelona and Poland, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic played until he was 41 and scored well over half of his 511 club goals – including one season – after turning 30 with 50 goals at Paris Saint-Germain at the age of 34.
Kane Less than two weeks after celebrating his 30th birthday in the summer, he moved to Bayern Munich but still considers his career to be only half over.
“The perception in sport or football in general is that when you’re 30 you start thinking it’s the end,” he explained this week. “But the way I look at it is that I have almost the second half of my career behind me.” [left]. I’ve played in the Spurs first team since I was 20 or 21, so I’ve had nine or ten years at the top level and I’m hoping for another eight or nine years at the top level.
“If you look at a lot of top players – Ronaldo, Messi, Lewandowski, Ibrahimovic – they almost got better at 30. This also happens in many sports. Everything is sorted out in your personal life.” You have a family and children, so the site is fine. You feel good physically, you feel good mentally where you are and that just allows you to focus on the football.
“I just want to keep playing. I think that thanks to everything, with recovery, sports science and the way the game has been adapted and adapted, it has allowed players to play longer. I would like to believe that my career will become my success.” Late thirties…at least.”
