Wild animal accident: What to do after a collision and what is forbidden

MAIN-KINZIG CIRCLE – There is an increased risk of wildlife crossing, especially in autumn. Unfortunately, if a deer, wild boar or fox suddenly appears on the road, a collision is sometimes unavoidable. Under no circumstances should you undertake dangerous evasive maneuvers, as the risk of running into oncoming traffic or hitting a tree is too high.

Instead: Hold the steering wheel firmly and brake as hard and quickly as possible. ACE spokesman Anton Hofmann from the Main-Kinzig and Wetterau district council explains what to do and what to avoid if a collision actually occurs.

To-Do‘s

• Turn on the hazard warning lights, put on a warning vest, secure the scene of the accident – and be sure to remain calm.

• If you have an injured passenger: dial 112 and provide first aid.

• Notify the police – they will inform the responsible hunter or hunter.

• Have the police issue a wildlife accident certificate – this is required as proof of insurance.

• Contact insurance: Damage to the vehicle can be settled through partial or fully comprehensive insurance.

No-Go‘s

• Never touch or pursue injured game: animals could react in panic and injure those helping.

• Never touch dead animals without gloves: parasite infestation or infections are possible.

• Never take wild animals with you: there is a risk of prosecution for poaching. (red)
