München – Many saw Katrin Haben Schaden as the first green mayor of Munich. But now everything is different. On Wednesday she surprisingly left local politics. She will resign from the office of second mayor. The Green group wants to discuss on Thursday who will succeed them.
The decision was difficult for her, says Katrin Haben Schaden. She describes the past three and a half years as Second Mayor as a privilege.
“The burden has left its mark”: Katrin Haben Schaden declares her resignation
“It was always my claim and also my understanding of my job to give 100 percent to the city I love, Munich. For three and a half years, I subordinated everything else to this task,” says Haben Schaden. In fact, the 46-year-old is considered a particularly hard-working politician, rushing from one appointment to the next every day, even in the evenings and on weekends.
She was responsible for mobility, economy and culture. She negotiated the diesel driving ban for the city and was also responsible for the renovation of the Gasteig. Important, demanding tasks – which obviously took a toll on her. “In the past few months, I have noticed that the strain of my public role has left its mark,” says Haben Schaden. However: “Filling out the office with reduced commitment is out of the question for me.”

“Pushing ahead with green transformation”: Schaden Schaden finds a new role at Deutsche Bahn
Katrin Haben Schaden wants to continue to work for sustainability and climate protection – but no longer as a politician, but at Deutsche Bahn. From the end of the year she will head the environment and sustainability department there. Having damage will “continue to drive DB’s green transformation forward with new impetus,” announces Deutsche Bahn boss Richard Lutz.
“The new task is far less high-profile, but offers a great opportunity to advance environmental and climate protection as well as the mobility transition throughout Germany,” says Haben Schaden. She is a trained business economist and used to work at the Sparkasse.
In 2020, Katrin Haben Schaden wanted to become mayor of Munich
In 2009, Haben Schaden joined the Green Party after the birth of her daughter. She was motivated by the shock of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986. She wanted to take responsibility for the environment, also to keep Munich as it is for her children. This is how the Greens describe Haben Schaden’s motivation in a statement.

In 2014 she moved into the town hall as a city councilor and in 2018 she became parliamentary group leader. In 2020 she ran for mayor. At that time, the Greens became the strongest faction on the city council. However, haben Schaden did not make it into the runoff.
Munich’s Mayor Dieter Reiter regrets the resignation of Katrin Haben Schaden
This spring was the midterm of the legislature. The AZ therefore met with Schaden to talk about its balance sheet. At the time, everything sounded like she wanted to try running for office again. This year she wanted to talk to her family and the party and then decide, she said. Munich mayor is a “dream job”.
Now the dream is over. And that came as a surprise to Munich City Hall. She informed him in a personal conversation on Wednesday, says Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD). “I expressly regret this decision, but of course I respect this step.” He describes the collaboration as constructive and trusting.

Dominik Krause and Mona Fuchs are possible successors for Haben Schaden
“Committed” is another word that comes up – also with SPD parliamentary group leader Anne Hübner. She learned to appreciate Katrin Haben Schaden “as a politician who pursued her goals with vigor and pragmatism.”
“We will miss working with her,” says Green Party leader Dominik Krause. “She played a major role in the 2020 election success and the associated increase in importance of the Green parliamentary group,” says his co-leader Mona Fuchs with certainty. Both are considered possible successors. But Krause’s chances may be a little better. He has been a city councilor for almost ten years, Mona Fuchs only since 2021. A decision is expected to be made on Thursday.
