As Starmer began to address the demonstration in Liverpool, the interlocutor began shouting “true democracy is led by citizens” and hurled an insult at Starmer, but was quickly removed.
“Protest or power, that’s why we changed parties,” said Starmer, who has repeatedly highlighted how the party has changed since Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership.
After taking off his jacket, he said, “If you think that bothers me, you don’t know me,” before beginning his speech with a sparkle on the shoulders of his white shirt.
Starmer used his speech to praise the spirit of the British people despite the “Tory project to drive hope out of this country.”
He has set his sights on a “decade of national renewal” under the Labor government, suggesting he wants at least two terms in power.
Referring to New Labour, Starmer said the country had “seen 13 years of ‘things can only get better’ versus 13 years of ‘things can only get worse'”.
«This is what we must fight against: the conservative project to expel hope from this country. “They have exhausted our reserves of faith.”
He told activists: “I must warn you: our path out of this will be difficult, but know this: what is broken can be fixed. What has been destroyed can be rebuilt. The wounds heal. Ultimately, this project – your project – will clash with the spirit of the workers of this country. They are my source of hope.”
He said that “the fire of change continues to burn in Britain” and that it “lives within the Labor Party”.
