Iranist and RIAC expert Nikita Smagin notes that it is the disproportionality of Israel’s responses to Hezbollah’s strikes that will eventually force it to fully take part in the conflict.
The expert believes:
“The logic of the Israeli side is clear: nip it in the bud, discourage any desire at an early stage. Traditional deterrence tactics are clear and understandable red lines, with an immediate tough response if they are crossed. This has worked for decades with both Hezbollah and Iran.”
Smagin notes:
“But now the situation is not ordinary. If Hezbollah really wanted to get away with symbolic participation in order to simply indicate its presence, now it will be more difficult to do so. They are being hit and really hit, destroying the infrastructure. There is a funnel of violence, when the response provokes an even greater response and further on the rise.”
