Lawyer Nelson Caucoto was satisfied with the arrest of former military officer Pedro Barrientos, by the National Security Investigations Office of Tampa, on the Space Coast, United States, within the framework of the extradition process being carried out against him. required by the Chilean justice system for the crime of Víctor Jara and Littré Quiroga.
Caucoto, who represents the family of the national singer-songwriter and Quiroga in the criminal trial that took place in our country, pointed out that “we, as the defense of Víctor Jara and littré Quiroga, are very satisfied with the arrest of Barrientos in the United States, because “It comes to account for a missing link up to this moment in this trial.”
In this sense, the lawyer pointed out that “the extradition process is a great instrument in the fight against impunity that has been established by International Law so that the purpose of this institution is being fulfilled.”
For Caucoto “Barrientos must be condemned just as the other soldiers in the case were. We hope that this process is as expeditious as possible to close this chapter definitively, so that Víctor and Littré finally rest in peace,” he expressed.
With his arrest, according to the lawyer, Barrientos will be expelled from the United States to Chile and it will be Minister Miguel Vázquez, who filed the case in the first instance, who will have to reopen the chapter referring to the former military man, whom he had temporarily dismissed for years. back after his escape to the US.
The minister will also have to issue an accusation against the former soldier, who had already been prosecuted in this case for the crimes of kidnapping and qualified homicide of Víctor Jara and Littré Quiroga. Said accusation must be notified to Barrientos once in the country, so that he can appoint a lawyer and proceed to defend him, indicating the means of proof with which he intends to defend himself against the accusations made.
Once this evidentiary stage has expired, Minister Vázquez must issue a sentence, which should not be so different from that already pronounced against the other soldiers convicted as perpetrators of kidnapping and qualified homicide of both victims.
Until now, the date of Barrientos’ arrival in our country is unknown, since according to Caucoto, everything will depend on the North American authorities.
