With the All-Day Support Act and the associated gradual introduction of the legal right to all-day care for children of primary school age, the number of children in Germany who are cared for all day will continue to increase from 2026. This will also have an impact on organized sport in Saxony. That is why the Saxony State Sports Association, the Saxony Sports Teachers’ Association and the Saxon Sports Doctors’ Association have drawn up a position paper with the aim of strengthening cooperation between schools and sports clubs, enabling children and young people to grow up healthily and getting them to participate in sustainable sports in sports clubs in the long term.
There is already hardly any room for sport in many children’s increasingly longer school days: 70 percent of primary school children exercise less than the 60 minutes per day recommended by the World Health Organization. And while more and more students are overweight or obese, studies now show a deterioration in children’s motor skills even in preschool years.
The Saxony State Sports Association and its partners are therefore committed to providing active all-day care with daily sports and exercise options for all children. “Organized sport is already actively shaping this process, but the legal claim will result in new challenges for the clubs,” says Angela Geyer, LSB Vice President and responsible for children and youth sports in the Saxony State Sports Association.
“We want high-quality, qualified all-day offers to support school children in their healthy development,” says Geyer. “We are calling on politicians to think, act and finance across ministries in order to firmly anchor exercise and sport in the all-day care of Saxon children. This is the only way school and organized sport can benefit at the same time.”
“Sport and exercise are not interchangeable components of general education. Anyone who lends a hand here is endangering the healthy future of our children and young people!” appeals Peter Pattke, President of the Saxony Sports Teachers Association.
In a joint position paper, the Saxony State Sports Association, the Saxony Sports Teachers’ Association and the Saxon Sports Doctors’ Association formulate the necessary prerequisites and framework conditions for the organization of an active all-day event. At the same time, the alliance with the so-called “movement coaches” as a link between school and sports club and the efficient use of school sports halls through “sports facility sharing” provides concrete solutions.
