It’s not always easy to fall asleep, especially when thoughts are racing through your head like an untamed train. You lie there, eyes closed, but it feels like they are wide open behind the eyelids. The ceiling above you becomes a canvas on which all today’s events, worries and future obligations are projected in an endless loop.
We have therefore collected 20 songs that can help you fall asleep.
You will find the playlist at the bottom of the case
We start with The Smiths’ song “Asleep”. The song was originally the b-side to the single “The Boy with the Thorn in His Side,” and was later included on compilation albums and extended releases. It came in 1985.

Song number two on the playlist is the legendary “Lay, Lady, Lay” featuring Bob Dylan in his deep voice after his road accident. The song was released in 1969. The third song is the dark but extremely beautiful song that was one of Leonard Cohen’s very last: “You Want it Darker.” The song was released on September 21, 2016. Cohen died on November 7.
Then we move on to a group that has had a bit of a downward curve in recent years, but which on the song “MLK” is at its most hurtful and beautiful: U2. The song was the last track on “The Unforgettable Fire” in 1984. MLK is Martin Luther King JR.

The Radio Dept. released their song “You Stopped Making Sense” in 2010. The Swedish band’s album “Clinging to a Scheme” is what is called dreampop. Further after that comes Kodaline with “All I Want.” Irene released this song on her debut album in 2013. One of the songs that perhaps has the most pressure in it on our playlist, but which is at the same time so painful and good that it’s good to dream away with.
Jeff Buckley is there with song number 7 on the playlist, and the song “Everybody Here Wants You.” This song was a love song he wrote for his girlfriend which he never got around to publishing until he died very young.
Nick Cave then invites you to “Into My Arms” before REM will bring you “Nightswimming.” The Cave song is from 1997, while REM would swim at night in 1993.

Tom Waits hoped he didn’t fall in love in 1973, while Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam sang film scores about society in 2007. Song number 12 is Bon Iver’s beautiful “Holocene” from 2011. The playlist then ends with Sufjan Stevens, Beatles, Radihoead, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Cigarettes After Sex, Cowoby Junkies and if you haven’t fallen asleep before PJ Harvey ends with “Is this Desire?” then you can probably just start over.
At least you have heard 20 very good songs.
