Ionia Odos: On 14/11 the submission of tenders for Ioannina – Kakavia

A third attempt was launched by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in Epirus to complete the Ionian Highway by upgrading the Ioannina-Kakavia section. The project, which was auctioned and canceled twice, is being auctioned again with the inclusion of EADISY’s observations.

The cost of the project including VAT is 310 million euros, while an additional 76 million euros are included as options, for the Kalpaki-Kakavia section and the connections with the airport and the Ioannina Airport. In total, the cost amounts to 386 million euros.

In more detail, the object of the project is the construction of the section of the Ionian Road from its junction with the Egnatia Road to Kakavia and the Greek-Albanian border. The project includes two subsections:

– Subsection 1: Ioannina – Kalpaki. Beginning with the end of the concession contract (X.Th. 4+800) and ending with the end of AK Kalpaki (X.Th. 51+237.37) and a total length of 46.4 km of new alignment. The subsection includes six (6) Uneven Interchanges, of which the AK K3 Passaronos (X.TH. 21+940 – X.TH. 23+441) is Option 1, 1.47km long.

– Subsection 2: Kalpaki – Kakavia. Starting at the end of the AK Kalpaki (P.O. 51+237.37) and beyond the Kakavias border station (P.O. 74+349.66) and a total length of 23.11 km, the upgrading of the existing road is planned, which is Option 2.

The auction of the project is set for November 14, while two days later on the 16th of the month, the unsealing of the offers is scheduled. The duration of the projects is set at 54 months from the signing of the relevant contract. If the signatures fall by the summer of 2024, then the project, barring delays, could be completed by the end of 2028.

The project has been claimed by the region for two decades and a successful tender is now being sought so that it can be finally implemented. With Ioannina-Kakavia, the Ionian Road is completed as a vertical axis with the beginning of Antirrio and the end of the border crossing of Kakavia to Albania.
