After months of speculation, Sony finally made it official presented PlayStation 5 Slim. After three years, the game console received its third and most significant hardware revision so far. This time, not only the internals were changed, but the entire design of the device.
The body is smaller than the original PS5, Sony talks about more than a 30% reduction in volume and weight, which it has reduced by 18, respectively. 24%. But the family tree does not deny, the futuristic tower-like shape full of curls and replaceable sidewalls remain.
However, the sides are now divided into two parts and an optional optical drive can be installed instead of the left one. Rumors that the mechanics will really be a special accessory have been confirmed. However, it is not an external USB box like on a computer, but a module that clips onto the side. And it’s apparently only compatible with the PS5 Slim, it won’t be compatible with the original PS5 Digital Edition.
The internal SSD has also changed. In the original console, it had a capacity of 825 GB, now it is 1 GB, like the competing Xbox. Of course, you still have the option of adding your own NVMe card. In terms of hardware and performance, however, Slim is no different. A minor change is that the front USB-A 2.0 has changed to a double-sided USB-C 2.0. So the bundled cable for charging/powering the DualSense controller will already have USB-C on both ends.
The PlayStation 5 Slim will be priced at the same suggested retail price as the current version, and will hit stores in November. We don’t have a Czech price list yet, but in the eurozone the PS5 Digital Edition Slim will cost 450 euros (CZK 11,050), and the PS5 Slim including mechanics for 550 euros (CZK 13,500). The mechanism itself will cost 120 euros (2950 CZK). From next year, other colors of side panels will be on sale for 55 euros (1,350 CZK).
By the way, Sony no longer includes a stand for vertical installation in the box. It will be available separately for 30 euros (CZK 750). The standard equipment will only include a holder for horizontal placement. The PS5 was a single combo stand which is absolutely horrible.
