Uruguay’s Beef Exports and Slaughterhouse Activity Witness Significant Decline in 2023

The data offered by the National Meat Institute (INAC) show a reduction in beef exports from Uruguay and in the activity registered in the South American country’s slaughterhouses. Thus, from January to September, 1.63 million heads of cattle have been slaughtered, which is 11% less than in 2022 and 15% less than in 2021.

According to Eurocarne, so far this year the two slaughterhouses with the most activity are Frigorífico Tacuarembó with 154,817 heads and Frigorífico Las Piedras with 147,728 heads, adding up to almost 20% of the national total.

The value of beef exports in these three quarters totaled 1,501 million dollars, 26.8% less than in 2022. The amount exported reached 348,117 t, 13% less than in 2022.

Of the total, China purchased 194,890 tons of Uruguayan beef and contributed 47% of the value, with 708 million dollars, but the value of its purchases is 40.3% lower than in 2022. The North American market has had positive behavior, which It added 310 million dollars, 4.1% more, but in the case of the EU it was negative as it decreased by 8.1% to 224 million dollars.
