The Tradition of Sending Underpants to the Monarch: Explained in ‘The Queen’s Knickers’ and ‘The King’s Pants’

In the United Kingdom, it has been a tradition for schoolchildren to send underpants to the monarch for decades. The reason is the 1994 children’s book ‘The Queen’s Knickers’, which asks whether Queen Elizabeth has special underpants for every occasion. The book was used in many schools to explain to young children what exactly the queen does. In April, ‘The King’s Pants’, a similar book about the king, was published.

Students from a primary school in the English town of Oswestry have sent all kinds of underwear to Charles. They recently received a response from the King and Queen Camilla who expressed their gratitude for the “nice” gesture. According to a teacher at the school, the children “jumped for joy” when they received the letter.

According to Nicholas Allan, the author of the books, Queen Elizabeth also liked the underpants. “I’m so glad the tradition of sending underpants to the monarch continues.”
