Some saw it as an unacceptable provocation, others as the normal process of UN elections. On Tuesday, Russia failed to get elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC). It had already been suspended last year due to its war of aggression launched in February 2022 against Ukraine. Among the three candidates for the two positions reserved for Eastern Europe, the UN General Assembly preferred Bulgaria (160 votes) and Albania (123) to Russia (83).
For Moscow, this is a slap in the face. The same UN forum had already voted, in 2022, a resolution urging Russia to immediately and unconditionally withdraw from Ukraine by 143 for, 5 against and 35 abstentions.
