NHK Announces Draft Plan for Consolidating and Reducing Radio Holdings, Launching New Channels

NHK has proposed a plan to organize and reduce its media holdings as part of its structural reforms, and with regard to radio, the previous management plan clearly stated that it would consider future reductions. The management committee will compile public comments and vote on the management plan, and NHK will submit it to the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications. If approved by the Diet, the current three-wave system that started FM main broadcasting in 1969 will be changed to a two-wave system of New AM and New FM starting in 2026.

Furthermore, from December 1st of this year, it has been decided that the satellite broadcasting waves “BS1”, “BS Premium”, and “BS4K” will be consolidated, and new channels will be launched: HD “NHK BS” and 4K “NHK BS Premium 4K”.
