On the eve of World Mental Health Day, the French Public Health Agency confirmed that the use of emergency care for mood disorders, suicidal behavior and tendencies “rose sharply in 2021 and then 2022, remaining at a high level since then.”
Among young people between the ages of 18 and 24, “the increase continued significantly in 2023,” according to the French Public Health Organization.
High levels of suicide attempts between 11 and 17 years old
In September 2023, visits to emergency rooms increased for suicidal behavior and thoughts, mood disorders (particularly depressive episodes) and anxiety disorders, in addition to medical procedures provided by SOS Medecins for anxiety in people under the age of 18. year, especially among those aged 11-17 years, as is usual during the return-to-school period.
In these age groups, the recorded levels remained high but similar to those observed in 2021 and 2022, with the exception of the number of medical consultations due to suicidal ideation among people between the ages of 11 and 17 years, which showed higher levels than previous years, according to the French Public Health Authority. .
The Health Agency also handed over the results of the latest survey waves carried out since 2020, which allow monitoring the development of the mental health of the population.
In the age group of 18-24 years, the main barriers to consulting a psychiatrist were related to the cost of the consultation, the difficulty of disclosing or fear of what people might discover about themselves, and the fear of being discovered by those around them, according to the agency.
