Aranjuez, October 10, 2023

Organized by the Community of Madrid and the City Council of Real Sitio and Villa de Aranjuez, the Música Antigua Aranjuez festival celebrates its 30th anniversary from October 14 to November 19 with seven performances under the motto ‘This is how Farinelli sang in Aranjuez’, in tribute to the most representative figure of the riverside musical splendor, who went to the Spanish court in 1737 called by Queen Isabel de Farnese to cure the melancholy of King Philip V with his singing, laying the foundations of the great musical project that he would build during this monarchy and that of Ferdinand VI.

On Saturday, October 14, at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Royal Palace, Farinelli’s voice will be embodied in that of the Spanish soprano María Espada, who together with the Nereydas group and its director Javier Ulises Illán will inaugurate the festival with a program dedicated to the ‘Secret Book by Bárbara de Braganza’. Farinelli will also be present on Sunday October 29, at 12:30 in the Chapel of the Royal Palace, thank you ‘Scarlatti por Farinelli’, directed by Daniel Pinteño with Concerto 1700 and the young soprano Ana Vieira Leite. As well as on Saturday, November 11, at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Royal Palace, through ‘El Violin de Farinelli’, by the virtuoso Jorge Jiménez & Tercia Realidad. Prior to this last interpretation, half an hour before its start, the festival offers a Guided tour of the Palace of Felipe II, under the title ‘A portrait of the queens’.

Bach’s music takes on special weight in this edition, on the occasion of the commemoration of the 300th anniversary of the appointment of the German musician as musical director (Kantor) in Leipzig. On Sunday, November 19, At 12:30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Royal Palace, the American harpsichordist Kenneth Weiss will perform ‘The Art of the Fugue’, as the closing of the festival. But first, Bach’s music embraces jazz in two concerts. On Saturday, October 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the Teatro Real Carlos III, ‘Bach & “Bach”’, by Antonio Serrano, Daniel Oyarzabal and Pablo M. Caminero, and the Sunday October 22, at 12:30 p.m. at the Teatro Real Carlos III, with ‘Jazz about Bach’, by the Cuban saxophonist Ariel Brínguez Quinteto.

One of the surprises of the anniversary edition is the Renaissance day that arrives on Sunday, November 12, at 12:00 in the Chapel of the Royal Palace, led by the excellent Ministriles Hispalensis, who will receive the spectators on the terrace of the Palace, one of the few Renaissance gardens in our country, to whom they will guide with their shawms and sacks on a musical walk through the King’s Garden to the Palace Chapel to enjoy the repertoire ‘Courtly, street and overseas music’, spiced up by actress Cynthia Luque.

“I encourage river residents and visitors to enjoy this festival with 30 years of history, which revives the musical splendor of the Real Sitio and Villa de Aranjuez. And that allows, at the same time, to delight in such suggestive settings as the Royal Palace, the Garden of Felipe II or the Teatro Real Carlos III”, María del Pilar Dávila López, Delegate Councilor for Culture, highlighted.

A festival with 30 years of history that remains faithful to its traditional events with the Strawberry Train, as it allows the route to be combined with the performances on October 22 and 29 and November 12. Likewise, the festival offers meetings with the musicians, moderated by the young doctor in musicology Antonio Soriano, who offer the public the possibility of contextualizing their works in a relaxed talk prior to the concerts.
