Foot Care Tips for Diabetics: Avoid Pedicures at Salons, Consult a Podiatrist Instead

Diabetes can have an impact on the feet due to reduced blood flow and nerve damage, so sufferers of the disease need to be careful if they want to get toenail care or a pedicure.

“Type 2 diabetes sufferers also face a higher risk of foot infections, ulcers, and delayed wound healing. Nerve damage, known as neuropathy, is a major problem that further increases the chances of amputation,” said diabetes expert Dr. Rajiv Kovil, broadcast on the Hindustan Times page, Monday (9/10).

Many women with diabetes believe that a pedicure is an important part of their foot care routine, however, Kovil advises against getting a pedicure at a beauty salon.

Instead, he recommends visiting a podiatrist or orthotist who specializes in foot care to get proper foot care.

During a pedicure, even small cuts and scrapes on the skin can increase the risk of infection. In addition, cleanliness in the salon is very important, especially for diabetics.

Nail cutting should be done carefully, avoiding nails that are too short which can cause ingrown toenails and infection. The edges of toenails should be rounded with a file, not left sharp.

It is also important to note that painting toenails to hide fungal infections should be avoided.

“Foot baths should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between the customer and the cutting tools, and other equipment should be thoroughly washed and sanitized using a disinfectant solution or a surgical autoclave, which uses pressurized steam to sterilize instruments,” Kovil said.

Similar caution should be exercised when considering lower body massage at spas and wellness centers. Diabetics should avoid such services and consult a podiatrist or orthotist.

“Proper blood glucose control, regular exercise, healthy nutrition, wearing diabetic socks, and quitting smoking can help improve blood circulation in the lower body,” Kovil said in advice.

Kovil suggests early recognition can help prevent severe complications, including amputation.

“Be alert to the following indicators, pain in the calves when walking, brittle nails, cold feet, dry or cracked skin (especially on the feet), hair loss on the feet, changes in skin color, wounds that are slow to heal and tingling or numbness in the feet,” Kovil said.
