Bernie Sanders, the US senator and former presidential candidate for the Democrats, was in town today. Following his new book ‘It’s okay to be angry with capitalism’, he gave a lecture at the De Balie debate centre.
Sanders states in his book that the gap between rich and poor is only growing, that the economic system is creaking and the climate is completely out of control. According to him, it is all the fault of unlimited capitalism.
“A bit of the left-wing sound, which I am not necessarily a fan of,” says someone who attended the lecture. “But I think it’s interesting to hear what he has to say about it.”
Old white man
There was great interest in his lecture in De Balie. Tickets for the meeting sold out in no time. Sanders – an old white man after all – is doing particularly well among young people. And that can also be seen this evening in De Balie.
“I think that’s because he always stayed young,” says another visitor. “The consistency in his points. How he’s never really changed, always been clear. That’s very inspiring. And I think it’s also inspiring for younger people to see an old white man who still has that youthful has momentum.”
Yesterday afternoon, Sanders was in the Atheneum bookstore for a signing session. In addition to the Netherlands, Sanders also visits Belgium and Germany to promote his book.
