Leprosy is a skin disorder caused by infection with the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae.

Unlike other skin diseases such as chickenpox or herpes which are caused by viruses, leprosy has unique characteristics that make it worthy of further understanding.

Leprosy can indeed be contagious, but this disease is a type of skin disease that can be treated and rarely causes death.

However, this bacterial infection can cause disability in the sufferer, which is why early detection and appropriate treatment are very important.

Causes of Leprosy or Leprosy

Leprosy is caused by infection with the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae. This bacteria can spread from one person to another through saliva splashes when the sufferer coughs or sneezes.

Although leprosy can be contagious, it is not as easy to transmit as is often thought.

It takes a long time for these bacteria to reproduce in the body, and transmission requires quite intensive contact.

Apart from transmission through saliva splashes, leprosy can also be transmitted to people with compromised immune systems, those who live in or visit areas where leprosy is endemic, or those who interact with animals that can spread leprosy bacteria, such as armadillos.
