Violence Escalates on Lebanon-Israel Border: Islamic Jihad Crosses Separation Fence

The border between Lebanon and Israel flared up again on Monday, after gunmen belonging to the Islamic Jihad movement crossed the separation fence and wounded a number of Israelis, in a new indication of the possibility of opening a new front against Israel, in addition to the southern front with the Gaza Strip.

Our correspondent reported that 6 Israelis were injured during the confrontations that broke out on the border with Lebanon. Their injuries ranged from serious to minor after clashes with gunmen who stormed the border.

The matter began with the infiltration of armed men from Lebanon into northern Israel.

The Israeli army said in a statement that its forces “killed a number of militants who crossed into Israeli territory from Lebanese territory with the support of helicopters,” without specifying a number.

The statement added that military helicopters are “currently launching raids in the area.”

Israeli Army Radio said that the site is located near Admit, on the other side of the Lebanese border towns of Alma al-Shaab and Dhahira.

After that, the Israeli Home Front called on residents of the areas on the border with Lebanon to stay in shelters.

The Israeli army said that its soldiers, with the support of helicopters, were able to kill at least two militants who crossed the border from Lebanon.

Jihad is adopted

A Hezbollah channel in Ninchour reported on social media that shelling and gunfire were heard on Lebanon’s southern border with Israel in the town of Dhahira.

A Hezbollah official said that the group did not carry out any operation inside Israel.

Hamas officials denied their participation in the attack, but the Islamic Jihad movement announced in a statement claiming responsibility for the attack.

Statement by the Lebanese Army

In turn, the Lebanese army announced on the “X” platform (formerly Twitter) that areas near “the towns of Al-Dhahira and Aita Al-Shaab and other border areas were subjected to air and artillery bombardment by the Israeli enemy.”

The army command called on “citizens to take the utmost precaution and caution and not to go to areas adjacent to the border, in order to preserve their safety.”

Hezbollah attack

The incident comes a day after Iran-backed Hezbollah announced the firing of “large numbers of artillery shells and guided missiles” at Israeli positions in the Shebaa Farms.

The Israeli army said it responded with artillery shelling in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah has close relations with Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip.

On Saturday, the movement launched a surprise attack on Israel with missiles and land and sea infiltration.
