TV star Andrea Kiewel (58) witnessed the start of the war against Israel in Tel Aviv on Saturday. Nevertheless, she appeared on the “ZDF TV Garden” on a happy Sunday afternoon because the program had recently been recorded in Hamburg.
After filming in Hamburg, Kiewel flew to Israel and was surprised by the sound of sirens on Saturday morning. In her shelter she found out about the terrible events and described her despair in the “Jüdische Allgemeine”: “My stomach is a complete cramp. I’m shivering. Internally. Externally. I cry.”
She shares concern for the country with an Israeli friend, a former elite soldier. He immediately put on his uniform to fight for Israel. Kiewel supports those around her and takes care of those in need. She describes the solidarity at Dizengoff Platz: “We are all sticking together now to get through this nightmare.”
Kiewel expresses a lack of understanding about the attack and the security situation in Israel. She criticizes: “Where was the army, where was the Mossad? How can it be that our soldiers can be surprised in their sleep and killed coldly?” For them, the rocket attack on Gaza is the start of brutal violence against innocent people.
The terrible images and terror in Israel deeply move Kiewel: “I cry for the people who are being coldly slaughtered. Yes indeed! Slaughtered. I cry for the hostages who are being taken to the Gaza Strip.”
Despite the fear, Kiewel is not thinking about running away: “I am Jewish myself and love this country so much that it has become my home.” However, she emphasizes the urgency of concrete measures against terror and laments the inaction in Germany.
