Hamas Attack on Israel Prompts Increased Security Measures in New York City Synagogues

The attack by the Islamist group Hamas, from Gaza, on the population of Israel, keeps the Jewish community residing in New York City, the largest outside its country, on alert, which is why Mayor Eric Adams ordered the increase of police security in synagogues.

Eric Adams described the actions of Hamas as “cowardly” and noted that City authorities are monitoring to detect possible threats to the Jewish community.

“Our administration is in contact with Jewish leaders in all five boroughs and we have directed the NYPD to deploy additional resources to Jewish communities and places of worship throughout the city,” he announced in a statement.

He also clarified that while “there is no credible threat to New York,” at this time, the measure is to ensure that communities feel safe and have the resources they need.

“We express our deepest condolences for all the innocent lives lost in these attacks and hope that no other family has to experience the pain of losing a loved one,” he said.

US military aid “on the way” to Israel

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, announced this Sunday that new military aid is “on the way” to Israel and that “there will be more in the coming days,” the White House reported.

In a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Biden pledged “full support for his government and the Israeli people following a horrific and unprecedented attack by Hamas terrorists,” the US Executive added.

Separately, the Pentagon said the United States will provide ammunition and equipment to Israel and will reinforce American forces in the Middle East in response to Hamas attacks.

“The United States government will quickly provide the Israel Defense Forces with additional equipment and resources, including ammunition,” US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement.

The secretary added that he ordered the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford and its ships to be stationed in the eastern Mediterranean region. He also said that Washington will increase the presence of his ships in the area.

In Los Angeles, the Police also monitor synagogues

Like the New York Police Department, authorities in Los Angeles, California, are also stepping up patrols at synagogues and Jewish religious institutions. It is a precaution in the face of the war that broke out between Israel and Palestine.

For their part, New Jersey officials are sharing information and bulletins with local departments and institutions, with the aim of staying attentive to the situation.

What is Hamas and why is it attacking Israel?

The name Hamas is an acronym for the Arabic expression ‘Islamic Resistance Movement’. It was created in the late 1980s from a split in the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood following the start of the first intifada, or Palestinian uprising, against the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

It has controlled the Gaza Strip since it fought a brief war in 2007 with forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, whose headquarters are in the West Bank and who heads the Palestine Liberation Organization, explains the Reuters agency.

A year earlier, in 2006, Hamas had won the parliamentary elections in the midst of a conflict with Abbas, the agency adds. On the one hand, Hamas accused Abbas of plotting against it, while Abbas denounced a coup by Hamas.

Since then, violence has escalated between Hamas and Israel.

Israel has repeatedly attacked Hamas with airstrikes and, together with Egypt, carries out a blockade of the Gaza Strip citing security reasons. Hamas, from Gaza, has launched numerous rocket attacks.

Hamas is classified as a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom and other countries. This is due to their armed resistance against Israel, whether with rocket attacks or suicide bombings, among other forms of aggression.

The organization is backed by Iran, which finances them and provides them with weapons and training.
