Donald Trump has been out of power since January 2021. Yet one of his achievements continues to be built: the border wall between Mexico and the United States. On October 5, the Biden administration quietly announced the construction of a new section in the southeast. A measure that the president tried to minimize publicly, but which could well be a political strategy.
By train or on foot, since January, 245,000 illegal immigrants have attempted to enter American territory via the Rio Grande, on the border with Mexico. In one year, this represents an increase of around 20%. Sometimes arrested by Mexican border police, migrants often try their luck again the next day. Risking their lives, prospective immigrants pile up by the hundreds on the roofs of this freight train heading to the United States, which we see in the TF1 report above. Americans have seen images like these almost every day for months.
Faced with this situation, the Democratic president therefore made this unexpected announcement. Nearly 30 kilometers of additional wall will be built along the Rio Grande, the river that marks the border with Mexico for more than 2,000 kilometers. The White House tenant says he has no choice. “The budget law which financed the construction of the wall was already on track. I could not stop it”, defended Joe Biden following the discreet announcement of this measure. In front of journalists, he assures again: this wall will be totally ineffective in fighting illegal immigration.
