JAKARTA, Waspada.co.id – Tea is a drink that we cannot miss every day. However, it would be better to consume tea that is healthy for the body. For example, black tea is effective in reducing the risk of diabetes.
Quoting from the India Times, the claim comes from new research from the University of Adelaide in Australia and Southeast University in China, presented at this year’s European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Annual Meeting in Hamburg.
It is known that black tea is a type of fully oxidized tea that has undergone microbial fermentation. It is called black tea because the leaves oxidize and turn black.
Researchers found that someone who consumed black tea every day had a 53% lower risk of prediabetes and a 47% lower risk of type 2 diabetes than those who did not consume black tea at all. However, diabetes risk factors such as age, gender, ethnicity and body mass index (BMI) are also taken into account.
The data was taken from a cross-sectional study involving 1,923 adult participants – 436 of whom had diabetes, 352 had prediabetes, and 1,135 had normal blood glucose levels. These participants included those who did not usually drink tea and those who had a history of drinking only one type of tea. In this study, the researchers examined the relationship between the frequency and type of tea consumption with glucose excretion in the urine, insulin resistance, and glycemic status.
From the results of research that has been conducted, drinking black tea can contribute to reducing the risk of diabetes for two reasons. First, black tea improves insulin resistance so that our body is able to control blood sugar better. Second, black tea contributes to increased excretion of glucose in the urine so that blood sugar has less to control.
Apart from providing benefits for reducing diabetes, black tea is also believed to reduce drowsiness. Because black tea has the highest caffeine compared to other teas. However, the caffeine in black tea is lower than coffee. In this way, black tea is a solution to relieve sleepiness while working. (wol/okezone/eko/d2)
