Electric Vehicles Take Entertainment to the Next Level: Mercedes-Benz Partners with Apple for Advanced Sound Systems

Electric vehicles are shaping the future of automotive technology by incorporating advanced entertainment systems into the interiors of cars to meet the growing expectations of buyers. This stretch is evident with the recent launch of two electric SUVs by Mercedes-Benz in Australia. These vehicles are equipped with a 15-speaker sound system that is compatible with Apple Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos technology.

This partnership between the luxury brand and the tech giant marks the first time Apple’s music technology has been featured outside of its own products. It also follows the introduction of several high-end electric vehicle models in Australia, including those from Polestar, BYD, Audi, BMW and Porsche.

According to Mercedes-Benz Australia spokesperson Jerry Stamoulis, the inclusion of surround sound technology as a standard feature on its new electric SUV, the EQE 300, is a response to the increased expectations of electric vehicle buyers. He emphasizes that electric vehicles offer a higher degree of standard specification compared to their petrol equivalents in Australia.

In addition to the advanced sound system, the Mercedes-Benz EQE 300 also features a 12.8-inch touchscreen, voice assistant, companion app, interior LED lighting and semi-autonomous driving modes. The vehicle can also be upgraded to include the MBUX Hyperscreen, a responsive touchscreen that spans the width of the instrument panel.

Other technological improvements in electric vehicles are expected to include a rear-seat touchscreen in the upcoming redesign of the Tesla Model 3, a 5G connection, a head-up display and a voice assistant in the Polestar 3 SUV, and a system 12-speaker sound system with voice control in the BYD Seal.

Electric vehicle adoption in Australia has been increasing, with the segment accounting for 8% of new car sales in September 2023, compared to 2.7% in the same month a year earlier. Additionally, Australians have purchased more than 65,000 battery electric cars in 2023, representing 202% growth compared to 2022.
