Love is Blind Lawsuit: Woman Alleges Assault and Negligence in Reality TV Show

TVTran Dang, a woman who participated in the filming of the fifth season of the reality series ‘Love is Blind’, has sued the production companies behind the series. She claims, among other things, that she was assaulted and held against her will. She therefore believes that the makers have been negligent. The makers of the Netflix show deny the allegations.

Tran Dang participated in the filming, but will not be seen in the fifth season of ‘Love is Blind’. In the reality series she formed a couple with Thomas Smith. The two were therefore engaged. In a court document, which Deadline has seen, Dang claims that Smith sexually assaulted her during their vacation in Mexico. “He forcibly made repeated sexual contact and walked around naked, despite my express objections,” it reads.

Dang claims she informed the producers about the situation and indicated she wanted to quit. “But they didn’t listen. I was forced to film a final scene,” she says. According to her, the makers tried to “dismiss the incidents as a lack of appeal”. That would be the reason why the couple is not seen on screen.

Social experiment

Thomas Smith denies the allegations. His attorney, Kip Patterson, said in a statement. The producers of the series, Kinetic Content and Delirium TV, also deny the allegations in a joint statement. “We support and stand with the victims of sexual violence, but Ms. Dang’s claims against the producers are unmerited,” the statement read. They argue that adults voluntarily participate in “a social experiment” and can choose to stop at any time. They further state that Tran did not raise her concerns with them.

Chris Coelen, the creator of ‘Love is Blind’, has also responded to the complaint. “If someone came to me with complaints like this, we would immediately remove him or her from the experiment and talk to the person to sort everything out.” According to him, the alleged sexual misconduct was never brought to his attention.

Inhuman situation

It is not the first time that ‘Love is Blind’ participants have spoken negatively about the series. Earlier this year, Nick Thompson and Jeremy Hartwell, two former cast members of the show, opened up about the inhumane situation behind the scenes. “Netflix has control over every aspect of your life during the recording,” Nick testified. He stated that the participants were dropped in a hotel room without a key and could only drink from the tap water or the shower. In addition, they were also given eating at very irregular times. “But we were given a lot of alcohol. My body was overtired, dehydrated and starving. I lost almost seven kilos in the three weeks.”

Furthermore, they were also completely cut off from the outside world. “We were denied daylight, our cell phones were taken away and we had no sense of time,” Jeremy said. The candidates could not simply quit the show, because there was a clause in the contract that stated that they risked damages of 50,000 dollars (45,474 euros) if they left early.
