China broke the historical record for winning the most gold medals in Asian Games 2023 after breaking through more than 200 gold, Sunday (8/10). Meanwhile Indonesia finished in 13th position.

This is the first time a country has been able to win more than 200 gold medals. The previous record was also held by China at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games with 199 gold.

After artistic swimming and karate completed the final competition, China collected 201 gold, 111 silver and 71 bronze in the final medal standings for the 2023 Asian Games.

China won its last gold medal in the artistic swimming team free routine after beating Japan and Kazakhstan.

Since the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, India, the Chinese contingent has always been the overall champion. However, it was only at the 1990 Beijing Asian Games that the Chinese contingent always won more than 100 gold medals at every Asian Games.

China’s dominance in the Asian Games since 1990 has never been able to be disturbed by powerful countries such as Japan or South Korea.

Meanwhile, Indonesia remains in 13th position. The Indonesian contingent ended the 2023 Asian Games with a score of 7 gold, 11 silver and 18 bronze.

This result failed to meet the government’s target at the 2023 Asian Games. Previously, the government, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, targeted Indonesia to finish in 12th position in the 2023 Asian Games standings with 8-12 gold medals.

Even so, the Indonesian contingent still achieved the best results at the away Asian Games in the last 45 years since the 1978 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand.

At the 2023 Asian Games, Japan was runner-up with 52 gold, 67 silver and 69 bronze. South Korea took third place with 42 gold, 59 silver and 89 bronze.
