A major fire broke out in a business premises in Zutphen. The fire broke out just before midnight in a building that houses an e-commerce company and the office of a paint brand.
Because there was heavy smoke moving over the nearby prison, the fire brigade decided to scale up. Prison staff were advised to turn off the ventilation. “You gain a lot with this because you do not draw in air from outside,” a spokesperson told NOS.
No carbon monoxide
Measurements were taken in the prison by the fire brigade, but no carbon monoxide was found. According to a fire brigade spokesperson, evacuation of the prisoners was never considered.
About 70 firefighters tried to get the fire in the business premises under control. However, the building could no longer be saved and the fire brigade allowed it to burn out in a controlled manner. The fire brigade was able to prevent the fire from reaching an adjacent building. No increased concentrations of hazardous substances were released during the fire. There is also a residential area near the building, but the smoke has not moved there.
It is still unknown what caused the fire. This will be investigated later.
