Don’t have a sense of fashion? Time for love, say countless social media users. A lot of men get a makeover there from their girlfriends. And so they suddenly look much better and, above all, more fashionable. Although there is also criticism. “You don’t have your own style anymore, do you?”
From a chicer style and clear skin to even a new hairstyle: this appears to be the result of the ‘girlfriend effect’. A new trend on social media where you suddenly experience a real glow-up thanks to your partner. Consciously or unconsciously. But one thing is certain: your love is suddenly a real womanizer. And who wouldn’t want a handsome, charming and fashionable man by her side?
Get rid of the fashion faux pas that many men make
Countless couples have already shared videos of the ‘girlfriend effect’, which has already been viewed almost 95 million times on the video app TikTok. Former participant of the reality show ‘Too Hot Too Handle’, Australian Creed McKinnon, also admitted that he has committed fewer fashion blunders since he has been in a relationship.
But 21-year-old Gabe Escobar was the first to notice his style gradually changing since he got a girlfriend. His video with a series of before and after photos of his relationship received around 3.5 million likes.

“As a teenager, I never really received style advice from people around me,” Escobar says in a telephone interview with NBC News. “TikTok is full of videos with fashion or beauty tips for girls, but there are far fewer for men.”
So he is happy that he has now found someone who cares about him enough to give him honest feedback and fashion tips. For example, his girlfriend specially created a page on Pinterest with numerous outfit ideas. And she also put together looks herself. And the result is certainly impressive. While Gabe used to dress simply with a sweater and pants, he now wears more shirts and jewelry, and has let his hair grow.
Not everyone is a fan and here’s why
Yet not everyone sees the ‘girlfriend effect’ as something positive. Men would lose their individual style and therefore now have the same boring Instagram-worthy look. “These men look like a standard Zara model, where has their personality gone?”, says TikTokker Wildlin Pierrevil’s video.
Not all makeovers are equally successful, according to him. “I know skinny jeans may be back in fashion now, but I still hate them,” he says in his video. “And why do these men suddenly only wear neutral colors or only everything in black?”

He also doesn’t think some of the men’s looks are necessarily bad for the relationship. “Maybe your husband didn’t dress to your personal taste, but he felt good about it. So why change something that actually has nothing wrong with it?” says Pierrevil.
So he doesn’t think it’s a good thing that you try to change someone in that way. “While men may look better and more stylish, they should not become an accessory that adorns women’s social media profiles. There is also a difference between helping someone find a fashion sense and forcing a certain style on them. And certainly at the expense of their individual style.”
“I find some girls very mean,” the critic adds. “I saw a video in which the boy said: ‘I actually still like this outfit from the past’. And then you hear the girlfriend respond: ‘Ew, no, I hate it’. I think that’s a bit exaggerated.”
But that’s not what the trend is about, according to its creator, Gabe Escobar. “So I finally discovered in which clothes I feel good. I have never had my own style and now, thanks to my girlfriend, I do,” he says in the interview.
