Serie A: Genoa-Milan 0-1 THE NEWS
Milan did not forgive Genoa at Marassi in a fiery final: Pulisic’s goal in the 42nd minute (suspected handball excluded after VAR control) put the Rossoneri alone at the top of the table. In the recovery of chances for the rossoblù, Maignan was sent off, Giroud on goal, Genoa’s crossbar, the other goalkeeper Martinez was also sent off. But the result does not change and Milan celebrates the record.
87′ GOAL! Genoa – MILAN 0-1! Pulisic network. Pulisic was able to control Musah’s assist from the right in the area and kick with his left foot into the corner.
“I’ve never experienced a moment like this, I’m very proud for the team. I was lucky on the crossbar but then I made a great save, the emotion is almost like that of a goal.” Thus Milan striker Olivier Giroud who, after Maignan’s expulsion, replaced him in goal at the end of the match against Genoa. “As a child I liked going in goal, that’s why I went. I take the shirt home and frame it – he added smiling to Sky Sport’s microphones -. We never give up, three weeks ago we got a slap in the face, but we raised the level and today we are first. We fought like lions.”
Milan conquered Ferraris at the end of a frantic match thanks to a goal by Pulisic which sparked a lot of controversy for a possible handball considered regular by the VAR room and not even reviewed on the monitor by match director Piccinini. However, the referee was recalled in full injury time for a wicked exit by Maignan against Ekuban which, after seeing it again on video, led to the expulsion of the Rossoneri goalkeeper. Milan who ended the match with Giroud in goal, author of a fundamental save on Puscas and for this reason, rightly, celebrated at the final whistle by his teammates. But there are some episodes surrounding the Rossoneri’s victory that will drag on controversy for a few days. Starting from an intervention against Vasquez in the first half by Florenzi reported as regular by the VAR and by the referee himself which greatly infuriated the Genoa coach Gilardino, who was booked on the occasion. What triggered the home team’s anger was above all the action that led to the goal with the revised images showing a touch by Pulisic who, assisted by Musah, scored the winning goal. Pioli needed to include Leao, Pulisic and Giroud to get the better of a Genoa team that was also forced to give up Messias at the last minute after the withdrawals of Badelj, Retegui and Strootman. But Gilardino was able to redesign his team with a 4-5-1 that trapped Pioli’s dangerous men in the first half with a conclusion by Reijndersi saved with his foot by Martinez. The same Martinez who in the second half flew to lift Leao’s header into the corner while on the opposite side Maignan reached for Dragusin’s conclusion which a deflection from Reijnders had made very treacherous. The match then heated up at the end despite a very high pace during the 90′ of regulation play which had the addition of 14′ of injury time for the episode of Maignan’s expulsion, the rescue at Ekuban and the two occasions for Genoa, Gudmundsson’s cross from a free kick and Puscas anticipated by Giroud allowed the Rossoneri to maintain the advantage until the end. The seventh victory in eight matches brings Pioli’s team back to the top of the table with two points ahead of Inter who had inflicted the humiliating defeat in the derby. When the championship resumes, the Rossoneri will face Juventus, without two key players in Hernandez and Maignan.
