José Mourinho and Saudi Arabia. It seems destined to happen. It will be a matter of time. At least, judging by the Portuguese coach’s recent words.
Mourinho expressed his desire to work in the country, despite remembering that he is committed to Roma, and committed to his work at the Italian club, with which he has a contract until the end of this season.
It was in an interview with the Egyptian channel MBC Egypt TV, which belongs to the Saudi MBC group.
In the conversation, Mourinho recalls that he has already been to Saudi Arabia on two occasions, in the cities of Riyadh and Jedah. In the first, with Inter Milan, «when working, there was barely time to smell the culture». In the second, with more time, «it was very pleasant, I could understand what was coming», he said.
What was to come was the development of football in the country. A process that Mourinho also wants to be linked to. «No one knows the future, but I will definitely work in Saudi Arabia», assured the Portuguese coach.
In the midst of Roma’s results crisis – and speculation regarding his future – Mourinho recently recalled that he turned down “a crazy proposal” from Saudi Arabia last summer. It would be a gift from Al Hilal, who would be willing to pay him 30 million euros per year.
This Saturday, curiously, the Italian press once again questioned Mourinho’s continued leadership of Roma. The newspaper Corriere Dello Sport assures that he will be fired if he doesn’t beat Cagliari this Sunday. And he even names a successor: it would be the German Hansi Flick, who recently left command of the Germany national team.
A few days ago, the same press spoke of Antonio Conte as a possible successor. Roma, anyway, won the last two games.
In the midst of all this, Mourinho, at 60, finds himself working in Saudi Arabia.
«The doors are open for me in Saudi Arabia, I want to feel the development that is happening there. Cristiano Ronaldo was the first to go and immediately gave a different perspective. Many players, not just those in the final stages of their careers, are going to Saudi because the competition is strong. Not only in the championship, but also in the Asian Champions League, which is very interesting », he said.
