French Schools Temporarily Close as Bed Bug Crisis Escalates

French bed bug crisis forces 7 schools to temporarily close

(AFP, Paris, 6th) A bed bug crisis broke out in France. Education Minister Gabriel Attal said today that authorities had to close seven schools due to growing concerns.

“I believe bed bugs have been detected in 17 establishments, varying degrees of severity, and seven establishments are closed as I speak to you,” Attal told France 5.

He said that he has worked with the Ministry of Health and regional health agencies to prepare a list of “approved and recognized” pest control operators “so that the principals of each school can get in touch and quickly allow the operators to intervene.”

It is believed that one in 10 homes in France has been infested with bed bugs in the past few years, often requiring hundreds of euros in pest control operations, often requiring repeated applications.

The blood-sucking bugs are also found in the Paris Metro, high-speed trains and Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport.
